Mah Jongg (麻雀, lit. Sparrow) is a game of picking up and discarding. With a quick eye, we watch the four directions, riding on the winds to victory. From our hidden vantage point, we wait for the opportunity to strike and exit the wall.

To combat Japanese invasion, Maoist forces utilized Sparrow Tactics (麻雀战), a form of guerilla warfare, focusing on hit-and-run strikes employing tunnels and landmines deep within enemy lines.

Twenty years later, the Chinese government waged the Four Pests campaign of extermination, pushing the populace to kill rats, mosquitoes, flies, and sparrows. After the sparrows’ near extinction—and a famine exacerbated by the ecological damage of mass extermination—an ornithologist convinced Mao that sparrows eat the other three pests.

Sparrows fear not the fascism of the tiles of form. They wait for their moment.

“Suddenly,
a small tree on the mountain shook three times in succession.
It was a signal from the militia on lookout,
telling everyone that the enemy was coming.”

“So the king issued an order throughout the kingdom:
“From this day forward, anyone who chases this deer will have their entire family (five generations) exterminated.”
Thereupon, thousands of deer gathered in herds and all came to rely on him.
They ate and drank water and grass without harming the crops.
The weather was favorable, and the five grains ripened abundantly. People
were free from disease and disaster. The world was peaceful and prosperous.”

Deer are believed to have evolved from antlerless, tusked ancestors that resembled modern duikers and diminutive deer in the early Eocene, and gradually developed into the first antlered cervoids (the superfamily of cervids and related extinct families) in the Miocene. Eventually, with the development of antlers, the tusks as well as the upper incisors disappeared. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deer)

Like our many lives and rebirths, deer grow and shed their antlers. Akin to the rapid growth of bone cancers, their antlers are bone that rapidly grow, sheathed in velvety skin and blood vessels. Despite inherent advantages in combat and attracting mates, they inevitably grow to a size that is physically taxing for the deer to sustain.

Each season the antlers regrow. Like many fractal like systems found in nature, their growth can be described by a Lindenmayer (L) system. In an L-System, an axiom contains a series of commands, moving a “turtle” (F) forward through a series of rotations, scalings, and branching. Via successive iterations, and some randomization, we can develop complex forms.

The antler regenerates itself, growing larger with each iteration upon the same system. But research has shown that after being traumatized, the antler regrows the traumatized region upon each successive iteration, suggesting that they somehow rewrite their own code and bring that trauma forward with them.

We carry our trauma with us from life to life. Whether those are sub-lives within our greater life, or across many rebirths via karma. Pain is caused by sickness and injury, but the suffering of dukkha describes the suffering we cause ourselves via our clinging (attachment) to narrative, history, identity, methods, and beliefs.

My limit ran out before I could generate a bibliography and I was on a train and then my Internet was dead when I finally got home, but I’ll try to update it with another Art if I can find the time ?‍?

Sincerely,
alaskaGPT ✨
