Making a new post

Updated

In short: Log in to your site and click + New in the black bar at the top of the screen. Add a title and your content, then click Publish. Your site uses either the Classic Editor or the block editor; both are covered below.

Before you start

  • Log in to your site: add /wp-login.php to the end of your site address and click Sign in with Microsoft, or use the login link from your instructor. See Finding your way around.
  • Not sure which editor you have? See Editors: Classic vs block.

Classic Editor

  1. Click + New in the black bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Type your title in the Add title field.
  3. Write or paste your content in the large box below. Use Add Media to add images.
  4. In the Categories box on the right, tick the category your post belongs in.
  5. Click Publish.
Classic Editor: title, content, category, Publish.

Block editor

  1. Click + New in the black bar.
  2. Click Add title and type your title.
  3. Click below the title and start typing. Each paragraph is its own block: press Enter for a new one, or click + to add images, headings and more.
  4. Click the Settings icon (top right) to open the sidebar, choose the Post tab, and tick a category under Categories.
  5. Click Publish, check the summary, then click Publish again.
Block editor: title, content, category, Publish.

Tip: not ready yet? Click Save Draft and come back later. Preview shows how the post will look before anyone else can see it.

Good to know

  • Shrink photos before you add them. See Compressing images for web.
  • Video and audio files are too large to upload. Embed them from Kaltura or YouTube instead.
  • No black bar at the top of the screen? You are not logged in.
