From & Beyond Design:A Collection of Design Research Explorations

From & Beyond Design is a research journal created by the 2024 Master of Design cohort at Emily Carr University. It brings together a layered, plural, and powerfully personal archive of practice-based research. Created to be more than just a typical catalogue or academic journal and invites readers into the diverse and deeply felt processes of emerging designers working across material, digital, social, speculative, and embodied modes.

This collection holds space for voices that design from lived experience and beyond disciplinary boundaries. Across its pages, you’ll find practices that centre advocacy, challenge design norms, and honour multiplicity, whether through self-publishing and zine-making, typographic activism, playful methodologies, or tools for care. Themes of inclusion, equity, and reflection thread through the work, as do the specific, sometimes messy but always human, experiences of design researchers pushing toward new ways of being with and designing for the world.

The publication is organized through collective editing into thematic sections; Approaches to Advocacy, Designing for Specificity, Narratives of Visual Communication, Centering the Self, and Methods for Care. It is a snapshot of a moment, doubling as a prompt for what design can become when approaching the process with urgency, passion, intention, and in the spirit of collaboration and curiosity.

From & Beyond Design is available as a limited-run print edition through Occasional Press and at the READ Bookstore.
