Stories of Emily Carr

Stories of Emily Carr is a collection written, edited, and designed by Communication Design 3rd year students in Fall of 2025 and published by Occasional Press to mark the school’s 100th year anniversary. Produced with editorial support by Katherine Gillieson (instructor) and Wenrui Liu (TA), and published by the Occasional Press.

Katherine says: “With this centennial year, I thought this is an ideal opportunity to make use of the immediate location of the campus and to encourage the students to reach out and connect with the local community, staff and faculty, current and past students, and more. They are also gathering important visual research information — sourcing archival photography, doing interviews with community members, creating original illustrations, on- and off-site photography, etc. — the whole project brings multiple requirements in terms of authorship, curation, writing/editing, as well as typography and publication design. This project combines a solid structural experience in publication design with a big outreach and place-based component, requiring a consideration of our immediate locale and history, and working with people.”
