The Occasional Press’ first project was the flagship publication Occasional Papers. This book is a practice-based research compilation that began as an idea. We wanted to create a dissemination channel for art, media and design research at Emily Carr. We wanted to showcase the work of the community writ large; students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local partners, and more. We aimed to champion equity, diversity, ethical practice, and to reflect the diverse and pluriversal nature of the Emily Carr community.

After months of preparation (beginning with an unassuming no-reply email), and thanks to the dedication and tireless work of the Occasional Press team and our contributors, we were able to launch the first edition of Occasional Papers in the summer of 2022.

This challenging and diverse collection reflects a spectrum of practice-based work, connected through a rhizome of themes touching on sustainability and reciprocity, working with More than Human beings, place-based material practice, and sustainability and economics. It includes human-centred research champion storytelling for mental health and consider resilience through VR in the wake of COVID-19, art labour market, the use of XR to support chronic illness, and more.

The collection represents a balance of contributions from faculty, under-graduate and graduate students (MFA and MDes), as well as alumni – truly a broad spectrum of community contributions in what is normally a rather siloed institution.

Editing and design by the OP Team, with contributions from:
Julie Andreyev, Cheryl Wong, Chris Carruth, Christa Clay & Chiara Schmitt, Vannysha Chang & Malika Gill, Jenie Gao, Zahra Jalali & Kimia Gholami, Randy Lee Cutler, Shraddha Kumbhar & Monserrat Palencia, Sunny Nestler

Published by the Occasional Press in 2023.
