General Studio Information
The Emily Carr Communication Design Studio is located in rooms C3215 (main studio) and C3218 (work room), and contains equipment and work spaces for students in the Communication Design (COMD) degree program. For interdisciplinary access: please email comdtech@ecuad.ca about your inquiry, or fill out the Request For Support form found on the ECU Technical Services page.
Current tech hours:
Monday–Friday 8:30 – 4:30
Here’s our studio page on the main Emily Carr University website.
Studio Access, Summer 2026
- The studio is available any time during building hours for COMD students. You should already have card access if you’re a degree program student enrolled in a Communication Design summer course, or are a current Master of Design student. If that’s you, but your card doesn’t work on the studio doors, please contact Facilities.
- Risograph printing is available during technician hours only. You can book time online (see below.) For new interdisciplinary requests (all students besides COMD majors, MDes, or classes where a Riso project has been arranged for everyone), please start with a Request for Access + Support describing your project before booking an appointment. We have more detailed printing access information on our Risograph Moodle.
- Students (and faculty and staff) can book a technician appointment for Risograph printing by going to the studio page on the main Emily Carr website, and clicking the “Book Riso Time” button. Members of the ECU community who have been set up for hands-on Risograph printing access will also be able to book print time separately from tech appointments. Bookings won’t be available more than 2 weeks in advance.
- Students are welcome to work in our two attached classrooms any time during building hours if these rooms are not otherwise booked for courses or meetings.
- Sorry, there’s no studio and equipment access available for alumni or the general public unless it is organized by the University (for example: guided campus tours, special events, guest speakers, or curriculum and research partnerships)
COMD Studio Equipment + Material List
Let’s Work Safe and Clean
- Please follow all posted signage and tech instructions about health, safety, and clean shared studio use.
- Do not spray aerosols in the studio. This includes spray paint, spray glue, and fixative. These materials are a health and safety hazard, and all indoor spraying at school must be done in one of the designated ventilation booth spaces (1st floor C1290 by the Tool Checkout, 3rd floor C3226 by the Design Wood Shop, or 4th floor A4016 near Print Media.)
- Please avoid bringing materials with “poison” or “flammable” warning labels into the studio.
- We are generally a clean studio, and want to avoid materials that leave the work tables messy for other students. Yes: most non-toxic and non-aerosol paints, glues, and inks are fine. Hot glue must be used with protective paper or cardboard underneath, never directly on the table surface or cutting mats. No: Please, no woodworking, metalworking, wet clay, or oil paint. If you’re not sure, please ask the technician!
